Canadian Finance Minister on Hot SeatJan 8, 2006 - Linknet Finance News Canadian Finance Minister on Hot Seat over Alleged Insider Trading by Rick Hendershot, Linknet Finance News, January 8, 2006Questions over the possibility of leaked information preceding a major federal government taxation announcement in December continue to plague Canada's finance minister, Ralph Goodale. Trading in income trusts spiked Nov. 23 on the Toronto Stock Exchange just hours before an announcement from Goodale that the trusts would not be taxed. This was after months of speculation that the governing Liberals would introduce a new tax to "level the playing field" with respect to income trust earnings. Shortly after the November incident, opposition critics referred the matter to the national police, the RCMP, and last week police said they had begun a criminal investigation into the matter. This has happened right in the middle of a national election campaign where the Liberals are fighting for a renewed mandate. The election date is January 23. Estimates are that stocks in income trusts throughout Canada had lost billions of dollars in the months preceding Goodale's announcement. Liberal opponents claim ordinary investors, seniors, and pension holders have lost large amounts of money while selected friends of the party profited from the insider information. Opposition parties have demanded Goodale's resignation while the investigation is taking place, but so far he has refused to resign. Prime Minister Paul Martin has stood by his finance minister claiming he is "a man of integrity". Meanwhile Liberal support in the election has begun to decrease as one problem after another plagues their campaign. Linknet-News.com
