Healthy Living Blog Quality of Condoms Important in Fight Against STDs Regular and persistent use of high quality condoms is the best way to stop the spread of STDs (sexually transmitted diseases) according to experts. Condom quality is very important in the fight against STDs. Brand name condoms go through extensive quality control tests at every stage of manufacturing. In the US, condoms are electronically tested for holes and defects. Samples are also taken from each lot and visually examined using a water leak test. In this test the samples are filled with 300 ml of water and suspended for 3 minutes. Also, samples from each lot undergo an Air Inflation Test. The test condoms are filled with air until they reach the bursting point. They typically will hold about 40 liters of air -- the equivalent of 9 gallons of water! Other samples are checked for size and thickness. Still others are tested to destruction for physical strength, and some are even artificially aged by applying high temperatures to ensure that they will retain their quality well beyond their 5 year product life. But just why it works has been the subject of speculation. Researchers have not been able to pinpoint the effective agent in lowering blood pressure and didn't know whether it was the lower salt content, lower cholesterol or the presence of fruits and vegetables. Now this study suggests that something in dairy products -- probably potassium and magnesium -- contributes to lower blood pressure. According to head researcher Dr. Luc Djousse, "Our study showed that dietary potassium and magnesium were associated with a lower odds of high blood pressure." The study looked at 4,797 participants of the Family Heart Study, sponsored by the U.S. National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. Participants were divided into four groups based on the amount of dairy they ate. For purposes of the study, dairy included, cheese, yogurt and milk. The most surprising finding was that systolic blood pressure was 2.6 millimeters of mercury (mm Hg) lower, on average, for people in the highest dairy eating group when compared to those in the lowest dairy eating group. However, the benefit disappeared when saturated fat content was taken into account. In other words, eating high fat dairy countered the impact of low fat dairy. But when saturated fat content was taken into account, the beneficial effect on blood pressure was only seen among those who ate lower amounts of saturated fat. In this group, participants who ate the most dairy had a systolic blood pressure that was 3.5 mm Hg lower than those who ate the least dairy. According to the study the results are pretty clear: eat low fat dairy to lower blood pressure. Stay away from high fat dairy.
